Leading the conversations and opening up doors

This week I saw someone demonstrate a style that really struck a chord with me. They shared their view with confidence and experience, but also with genuine humility, acknowledging that a scenario wasn’t impossible, only that they hadn’t seen it happen yet. That subtle difference created a space where others felt open to build upon it.

They didn’t just invite contributions; they actively created the opportunity for others to explore ideas, share their knowledge, and voice their thinking. It was trust in action, empowering others not simply by opening the door, but by encouraging them to walk through it.

To me, this was a reminder of what great collaboration looks like. We offer our perspective, staying humble enough to recognise its limits, and we bring others forward with us. We build on ideas rather than chip away at ideals, we discuss rather than direct, and we facilitate exploration and growth rather than steering toward set answers.

I’m always fascinated by people’s dynamics. I enjoy learning from others whilst gaining inspiration, noticing the small behaviours that make a conversation better or a team stronger. When we stay open to how others work, we often spot opportunities for our own growth too.

Sometimes the real value isn’t in leading the conversation, but in noticing the moments that open doors for others, and in doing so, help us all grow.
